Born in November? You’re lucky enough to have two birthstones to choose from! Topaz comes in a variety of colours, while citrine has a warm, sunny shade. Citrine was added to the list of birthstones to give further choice with a gem that is both beautiful and accessible.
Citrine is a transparent, yellow-toned quartz. A trace of iron in the gem’s structure is the cause of its warming colour. Naturally occurring citrine is rare, so today, most of the citrine available is the result of heat-treated amethysts.
Top sources for naturally occurring citrine include Brazil, Namibia, Madagascar, Russia and the United States. It is found near magma activity, as citrine is formed as a result of amethyst or smoky quartz being heated up. Today, most citrine is produced by the application of heat treatment to these quartz.
Some believe that citrine is a healing gemstone, with calming, soothing and comforting properties – despite its zingy colour! It has also been associated with luck and prosperity.
Citrine ranges from yellow to brownish-orange shades. It’s believed that the name is derived from the old French word for ‘lemon’, which is ‘citron’.
